If you’re reading this, chances are you’re on the hunt for a career opportunity in finance. Well, you’ve come to the right place. I’ve been in the trenches of finance for over 25 years, making job changes along the way, and I’ve picked up a thing or two about landing that dream job. Below are some tips I have found helpful throughout my career.
- Network Like Your Career Depends on It (Because It Does)
Look, I get it. Networking can feel about as fun as a root canal for some folks. I have said before that the older I get the more I’m losing my people skills (there might be some truth to that but also some exaggeration on my party). But here’s the cold, hard truth: in finance, who you know can be just as important as what you know.
Throughout my career I have pushed myself to attend every industry event, alum mixer, and finance meetup I could find. Pushing myself to attend these events has benefited me and it benefits most people in finance.
So, dust off those business cards, polish up that elevator pitch, and get out there. Join professional associations, attend webinars, and reach out to alumni. One of my favorite professional associations is Financial Executives International. They have over 50 local chapters around the United States. And remember to follow up with people you meet. A quick “great to meet you” email or connection on LinkedIn can go a long way.
- Embrace the Tech Revolution
Listen up because this is crucial: finance isn’t just about crunching numbers anymore. If you’re not tech-savvy, you’re already behind the eight ball.
I can’t tell you how many resumes I’ve seen that list “proficient in Excel” as a critical skill. That’s the bare minimum these days. You need to be familiar with financial modeling software, data visualization tools, robotic process automation, AI, and even a bit of coding.
So, take some online courses, get certified in relevant software, and stay on top of fintech trends. Trust me, it will set you apart from the crowd.
- Don’t Get Hung Up on Big Names
Trust me, there is more to being in finance than only those fancy Wall Street jobs. There are plenty of equally impressive, equally challenging opportunities beyond the Wall Street banks. There is a whole world of finance jobs out there that nobody’s talking about.
I’ve seen it firsthand. Fintech startups are blowing up left and right. Boutique firms are doing some wild stuff. Private equity is hotter than anything right now. Even regular companies need number crunchers. These places might not have the glitz, but they’ll give you a shot at doing real work and moving up fast.
Here’s my advice: don’t just chase the big names when looking for a career opportunity. Look for places where you can make a difference, where your work matters, and where you won’t be drowning in spreadsheets till midnight every night. Look for that opportunity with the most meaningful remit possible – where you can play a part in shaping and growing the company.
The finance world is changing quickly. It needs new blood and fresh ideas. If you’re not too afraid to look beyond the usual suspects, that could be you.
Getting a finance job is challenging, but it’s possible, too. Network, keep up with the tech stuff, and don’t limit yourself. Who knows? You might end up with a job that you truly thrive on every day. Crazy idea, I know, but weirder things have happened in this nutty world of finance.
So go out there and show them what you’ve got. Who knows? You may be the next finance hotshot. Good luck out there, and may the finance gods be ever in your favor!
